Unknown Knowns
Donald Rumsfeld defined three categories of knowledge:
"As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know."
To this, Inkstone adds a fourth:
Unknown knowns are things that are known to some, but not to most of us. These are the things that are familiar to academics, scholars and experts, but widely misunderstood or beyond popularly accepted ideas of how things are. Unknown knowns are uncommon knowledge.
To address these misnomers, Inkstone is developing a website of opinion pieces and essays by scholars, experts and scientists setting the record straight and helping ordinary, busy people, who are curious about the world around them, to unlearn/relearn. Each author is an established expert in their field, and the information they present is incontrovertible, but to us unknown. Unknown knowns is a wealth of explanations and reconceived ideas. It is a starting point for further learning and continuing education, allowing us to update our understanding of the universe.
