Poligo | 24-hour English Support

Professional English teachers check writing and answer questions, fast.

Johan and Matthew's original schemes were too grand, and they knew that they would be hard-pressed to find anyone to back a couple of unproven upstarts. They needed to start small. Their first project had to meet the following conditions:

  1. doable — pipe dreams were out;
  2. scalable — start small, but leave room to grow;
  3. with minimal start-up and running costs — shoestrings and oily rags only;
  4. requiring time, smarts and effort — something of which we have plenty;
  5. very high quality — get it right from the start;
  6. and highly profitable — we needed leverage: financial and reputational.

So, Poligo: an online education support service and community for English learners and teachers.

Poligo was created in collaboration with Graphic Alphabet Inc: a tight creative and web design operation also based in Tokyo, run by another Kiwi, Nathan Paterson. Graphic Alphabet made Poligo a reality.

Poligo would be a way for the team to cut their teeth and to distinguish themselves.  Poligo was designed to generate revenue from the start. It is a departure from the popular web approach of Give-It-Away-for-Free-and-Figure-Out-How-to-Make-Money-Later. And, so far, Poligo has performed exaclty as anticipated. Most importantly, Poligo has demonstrated the ability to return the gross profit margin forecast before our launch.

Poligo's personalised support for English students is an online, professional service. Users pay Poligo to help them write better and understand more through short, regular writing and asking questions. Poligo gives learners the freedom to study and learn from anywhere, any time. An essential element of Poligo's strategy is that rather than compete with schools and other learning methods, it is a perfect complement.
